some inspiration for the week.

"Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don't give up."

this is what happens when it's 100 plus degrees outside.

it's hot summer days like today that have me wishing for fall.
true, i am a child of the summer, with an august birthday.
but nothing compares to that first day that it's cold enough
to slip on your favorite hoodie and wear a pair of
tights with your favorite dress.
fall, for more reasons than one,

carolina countdown

so, june has been a month of ups and downs.

i have been seeing more of my friends
my sister is home from college & i've been having fun with her
i've been working out a lot

justin has been in south carolina, and i've been here
my eating habits need a bit of a makeover
i've been stuck in a reading rut

so, what's the plan now?

a little mini life makeover, that's what! (you know how i love my life makeovers... they're probably one of my most favorite things ever.)

and what is going to facilitate this makeover? a COUNTDOWN (another one of my favorite things... basically a list of practically anything is one of my favorite things, even if it is just a list of days until something happens).

so, drumroll please, i give you:

34 days for me to...

1. get in really good shape
2. have a good relationship with food
3. finish GWKTHN
4. start (and hopefully finish) at least 2 of the emily giffin books
5. clean out my wardrobe
6. hang out with friends a lot
7. self-tan (because i don't want to get skin cancer)
8. i think that's enough tasks - i don't want to get bogged down and sleep instead of doing any of these things

i am hoping to update you periodically while this countdown is occurring. but i'm not going to promise that, because then i may get bogged down and sleep instead of doing any of these things (see number eight above).

so there you have it.

the carolina countdown begins...

... NOW.

the mimosas that weren't.

Let me preface this by saying that my mother & I are not big drinkers. For as long as I can remember, we have always had a bottle of wine in our house, to be sipped on occasionally throughout the year. And well, ever since I've returned home after graduating college, my drinking habits have steadily declined.

That being said, one weekend, my parents and I had decided to go out for an early afternoon on our boat. We popped into Brookshires beforehand, in order to get supplies, snacks, and what we thought were to be mimosas.

They weren't.

They were orange juice. In a jug. With a label that said 'mimosas.'

We didn't know that, of course, until we were miles away, lazing on a body of water. We cracked open the jug, poured ourselves a generous glass each, and sat back to enjoy it.

Imagine our surprise when we realized we were gulping straight up orange juice. When we happened upon this discovery, we laughed endlessly, pretending to be getting wasted off of 'mimosas.' We struck poses of the kind you see in Facebook albums from 'the night before,' we 'cheersed' with our 'red cups,' and did all the other requisite drinking activities. I'm certain my dad was mildly horrified.

I'd like to close this little anecdote with a message for my local grocery store.

When you market something as a particular thing, please ensure that it is that particular thing. Persons frequenting your shop will not know that in order to achieve what you have claimed to be selling, they will have to add a key element.

me + money = me spending money

I want these:

What do y'all think? Right now I am on a 10-day absolutely no spending ban (inspired by Natalie via Twitter), so of course I'm happening upon tons of things I want to buy. These shoes I have looked at before and loved, and told myself no, and now I have happened upon them again. I just really like them. And what I really like about them is that I would wear them in the winter with tights. I pretty much want to wear these shoes every day.

I guess I'll just have to hope they're still there when my spending ban is over. And plus, they're only $32, which I think is a pretty good deal, ok?

I also want to buy the new Death Cab album, which will also have to wait til the 10 days are over.

Do you sense a pattern here? Is it worth going on a spending ban if all I'm doing is collecting items on a list to buy when the ban is over?
